Knox Will Be Giving A Speech To The Italian Innocence Project
Amanda Knox, the American exchange student convicted in Italy of murdering her British roommate in 2007, returned to Italy for the first time since she was released from an Italian prison. After a sensational trial and media frenzy, Knox’s conviction was thrown out, and she returned home to Washington state in 2011 after spending several years in an Italian prison.
Knox was again swarmed by media when she arrived in Italy to give a speech to the Italian Innocence Project, a nonprofit group that works to free the wrongly convicted. Knox opted not to do an interview before the trip.
“I’ve chosen not to do interviews in the lead up to Italy, in the hopes that what I will say in Modena will speak for itself,” Knox tweeted. “I’m returning to Italy as a free woman. Meanwhile, another innocent person is still in prison.”
Knox has become an advocate for people wrongfully arrested and convicted, both in the U.S. and abroad. She tweets regularly about cases like those of Cyntonia Brown, a 16-year-old sentenced to life in prison for shooting a man she says raped her, and Kimberly Long, who spent seven years in prison for a grisly murder before being exonerated.
Knox is also hosting a podcast, “The Truth About True Crime,” devoted to taking a hard look at the true-crime craze sweeping the country and what it means for the accused.
