Alt-Right man from Ohio arrested for menacing and telecommunications harassment
An Ohio man with connections to the “alt-right” movement has been arrested after posting threats directed at the Jewish Community Center in Youngstown, Ohio. 20-year-old James Reardon, who goes by multiple pseudonyms on social media and alt-right sites, is facing charges of menacing and telecommunications harassment.
Last weekend, Reardon posted a video of himself on Instagram shooting a rifle. The video was accompanied by an audio track of sirens and screams. Reardon wrote in the caption, “Police identify shooter of Youngstown Jewish Family Center as local white nationalist Seamus O’Rearedon.” He tagged the Youngstown Jewish Community Center in the post.
“Seamus” is the Gaelic version of the name James.
In the wake of a mass shooting in El Paso, Texas, by a Dallas-area white supremacist who posted an anti-immigrant screed on the site 8chan, authorities are taking such threats very seriously. The El Paso shooter, Patrick Crusius, admitted he was targeting Latinos because he believed they were “invading” the United States.
After Reardon’s arrest, the Cleveland chapter of the Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish group that confronts anti-Semitism, thanked law enforcement on Twitter.
“Grateful for the work of the FBI, local law enforcement and our community partners in the Youngstown Jewish community,” the Cleveland ADL said. “We will continue to employ all our resources to stop the spread of white nationalism and violent extremism.”
