These Are The Games You Grew Up On
It has been two decades since these game titles have been released to the world. They have captivated the hearts of gamers alike. The elements that these games were implementing, were mind – boggling, for its time. For example, 1998, was the first year we ever saw a Metal Gear, Zelda, and Sonic games in 3-D. Again, it was a big deal. So here it is: Five Games of 98 that made an impact.
5. Marvel Vs Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes
Platform: Arcade
Release Date: January 23, 1998
First off, no one expected Marvel and Capcom to do something quite like this. Sure, they already had some fighters like this before by releasing X-Men vs. Street Fighter (1996) and Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, respectively. But Marvel vs. Capcom seemed more experimental. The previous titles were sure to gather loyal Marvel and Street fighter fans, which mean those games, were sure to sell. Marvel vs. Capcom, had a bit of a disadvantage. Capcom incorporated a lot of characters that no one heard of. Therefore it might seem unappealing to most. They would be able to recognize Megaman and Streetfighter characters. However, Im not sure about if many would know who was Strider. In hind sight though, the game managed to release a sequel and five more. I guess the experiment paid off.
4. Spyro the Dragon
Platform: PlayStation
Release Date: September 9. 1998
Crash Bandicoot was gave Sony a lot of popularity in the 90s. Sony finally had a contender that could compete with the likes of Mario (Nintendo) and Sonic (Sonic). That’s when Crash Bandicoot spun his way into the gaming industry. Due to Crash’s success, no one fathomed Sony would have another contender. Then Spyro was released. Fans and critics alike enjoyed the game. Sypro ended up spawning countless sequels following its release.
3. Pokémon Yellow
Platform: Gameboy and Gameboy Color
Release Date: September 12, 1998 (Japan only)
Yellow didn’t touch American soil until 1999, so we still had to wait year. Once it was released in the states, Yellow was all any gamer was talking about. The idea of your very own Pikachu following you around Kanto, amazed many kids. The remakes of this game, Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu and Evee will be released later this year , worldwide due to the impact of this game.
2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Platform: Nintendo 64
Release Date: November 21, 1998
OOT has done so much for the gaming culture. Many gamers solidify Ocarina as not only the greatest Zelda game of all time, but the greatest video game of all time. It’s understandable why many people would say that. The story was amazing; it was filled with twists. The boss fights were riveting. The game included a new engaging battle system. It was the first Zelda game to have 3D graphics. Need I say more?
1. Metal Gear Solid
Platform: PlayStation
Release Date: September 3, 1998
From the Cinematic cut scenes, eratic boss fights to a mind-numbing plot, Hideo Kojima put everything he had into this game, back in 98. He wanted this game to make its mark. And it did.
