Standing before reporters at the Pentagon on Monday, Pete Hegseth delivered a forceful and emotionally charged message to America’s armed forces and to adversaries abroad: the United States did not seek war, but it is determined to end it.

“War is hell, and it always will be,” Hegseth acknowledged soberly, as he confirmed that a fourth U.S. service member has died following Iranian strikes in the region. The soldier, critically wounded during an aerial assault on a tactical center in Kuwait, succumbed to injuries after days of medical efforts. The identities of the fallen are being withheld pending family notification.

Despite the losses, Hegseth’s message was one of unwavering resolve.

“We didn’t start this war,” he said. “But under President Trump, we are finishing it.”

The Defense Secretary asserted that U.S. intelligence revealed Iran had been advancing plans to build a sophisticated missile and drone network designed to shield its nuclear ambitions. According to Hegseth, the buildup posed a direct and unacceptable threat to American forces and allies.

“Iran was constructing a powerful conventional shield for nuclear blackmail,” he said. “That ends now.”

Hegseth made clear that the mission’s objective is sharply defined and not aimed at regime change. The stated goals: eliminate Iran’s missile threat, dismantle its naval capabilities, and prevent nuclear weapon development.

“This is a decisive operation,” he emphasized. “Destroy the missile threat. Destroy the Navy. No nukes.”

The conflict has intensified rapidly. Pentagon officials confirmed that hundreds of ballistic missiles were launched toward U.S. forces across the region in recent days, most of which were intercepted. However, the rising casualty count underscores the seriousness of the confrontation.

Following Hegseth’s remarks, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Daniel Caine revealed that the final authorization came directly from Donald Trump.

“On February 27, the President approved Operation Epic Fury. His words were clear: ‘No aborts. Good luck,’” Caine stated.

In a separate interview over the weekend, President Trump indicated the military engagement could continue for several weeks, noting that the scale of the operation reflects the size and complexity of the battlefield.

But beyond strategy and timelines, Hegseth’s most passionate words were reserved for American troops.

“If you kill Americans, if you threaten Americans anywhere on Earth, we will hunt you down without apology and without hesitation,” he declared. “We will finish this.”

He closed with a rallying message aimed directly at the men and women in uniform:

“This is your moment. You are trained. You are prepared. You are the most powerful, most lethal fighting force the world has ever seen. The President and I have your back — through fire, through criticism, through everything.”

As major combat operations continue, the Pentagon says response efforts remain active and ongoing. For now, the message from Washington is clear: the United States stands united behind its troops — and determined to see the mission through.
