Academy Expels Members For Predatory Sexual Behavior
With the rise of the Me Too movement there is more power to victims in coming forward to face their predators, seeking justice.
The film academy supports the Me Too movement and is against sexual assault, leading the the expelling of Roman Polanski and Bill Cosby.
Bill Cosby was recently found guilty for three counts of sexual assault and is awaiting sentencing. Yale took his honorary degree and his name removed from the Television Academy website.
Roman Polanski was charged with sexual assault of a 13-year-old in 1977 and has been a fugitive in France since 1978. He was indicted and charged with 6 sexual-assault related felony counts in 1977.
Polanski was ordered to undergo a 90-day diagnostic screening at California state prison to determine sentencing, after 42 days he was placed on probation.
He fled the U.S. in 1978, with many unsuccessful attempts for extradition and court proceedings, with the case currently on-going.
He won his Oscar in 2003 for The Pianist and will keep the award, while having his name removed from the academy.
Last year Harvey Weinstein was the second member to be removed from the Academy to send a message that predatory sexual behavior has no place in the industry.
This action by the Academy is sending a message that sexual assault will not be tolerated and that they will not accept members who are sexually predatory.
