Plus, A Little Bit Of Baseball
The golfers on the PGA Tour asked for a U.S. Open course that would test them and engineer a move away from the low scores of recent years.
Be careful what you ask for. You might get it.
You can watch the second round of the Open from Shinnecock Hills on Friday at 4:30 p.m. ET on Fox, and this may be a good round to watch. Because you are not likely to see Phil Mickelson (7 over on Thursday) and Tiger Woods (8 over) making the cut. Woods is tied for 102nd with the likes of Jon Rahm and Adam Scott. The rough is so thick that search parties are weeding through it looking for errant shots.
Fox picks up the Open again on Saturday at 11 a.m. and on Sunday at 10 a.m. Watching excellent players be beaten by the course might remind you of your own travels and travails across 18 gritty holes at your nearby public links.
The World Cup features a compelling matchup on Friday at 2 p.m., with Spain – one of the favorites to win the championship – meeting Portugal. Fox will show this. Germany, also a favorite, plays Mexico (now the U.S.’ rooting interest in the absence of its own team) on Sunday at 11 a.m. on FS1.
MLB gets a strong matchup on Sunday at 5 p.m. between the Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners. Both are strong contenders in their divisions and the Mariners have been extraordinary at winning one-run games. If you can’t wait until Sunday, catch these two on Fox on Saturday night at 8 p.m.
If you miss football so much you will watch a version with three downs and 12 men on the field legally, catch the Canadian Football League opener between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Calgary Stampeders on Saturday at 7 p.m. on ESPN2. The Ti-Cats are proud possessors of quarterback Johnny Manziel, though he is the backup to Jeremiah Masoli (talk about things no one should know). Hey, it’s football.
So introduce your heiner to your recliner, settle in and enjoy this eclectic buffet. And have a Happy Father’s Day.
