In a joint effort to address concerns surrounding Bluetooth trackers, Google and Apple have announced a partnership aimed at enhancing user privacy and safety.
Soon, both iPhone and Android users with updated software will receive alerts notifying them of the presence of a nearby wireless location tracking device. This initiative seeks to empower users who may unknowingly be tracked and wish to take action to prevent it.
The move comes as a response to the potential misuse of Bluetooth trackers, exemplified by devices like Apple’s AirTag, which have been both a boon for locating lost items and a tool exploited by criminals for tracking individuals without their consent.
The updated devices will prompt users with a message indicating that a Bluetooth tracker is “found moving with you.” Users will then have the option to locate the tracker audibly and receive instructions on how to disable it.
While Bluetooth trackers like AirTags have proven beneficial for recovering lost belongings, reports of their misuse have underscored the need for preventive measures. Apple and Google’s collaboration aims to integrate alerts and warnings into their respective operating systems to mitigate potential risks.
Although AirTag misuse prompted initial responses from Apple and Google, the scope extends beyond proprietary devices. Third-party companies producing similar trackers will now be required to adhere to specifications set by Apple and Google, ensuring consistency in alert systems across different brands.
Apple and Google are further working on establishing a standardized industry specification for Bluetooth tracker devices. While the official standardization process is ongoing, both companies have taken proactive steps to implement alerts in their operating systems, with Apple’s iOS 17.5 and Android devices version 6.0 or newer being the first to receive these updates.
