Bruce Springsteen is back in the spotlight, and this time, he’s using his music as a megaphone for social justice. The legendary rocker released his latest protest song, Streets of Minneapolis, this week, drawing widespread praise from fans and activists — and a sharp rebuke from the White House.

The song tackles the federal immigration enforcement presence in Minneapolis and calls out the Trump administration by name, narrating the tragic deaths of Renee Macklin Good and Alex Pretti, who were fatally shot by federal agents earlier this month. Springsteen shared the track on Bluesky, stating, “I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday, and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good. Stay free.”

Fans have praised Springsteen’s timely and fearless response to recent events, while critics in the administration have dismissed the song as “irrelevant.” White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told Entertainment Weekly, “The Trump administration is focused on encouraging state and local Democrats to work with federal law enforcement officers on removing dangerous criminal illegal aliens from their communities — not random songs with irrelevant opinions and inaccurate information.”

The song’s accompanying music video, directed by longtime collaborator Thom Zimny, combines on-the-ground scenes from Minneapolis with intimate studio footage of Springsteen performing, adding a personal and urgent layer to the message. Pam Springsteen, the Boss’ sister, also contributed production footage for the project.

Springsteen’s political activism is well-known. Since 2016, he has been an outspoken critic of Trump’s policies, previously calling the administration “corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous” during his Land of Hope and Dreams tour. He has consistently used his platform to advocate for democracy and human rights, encouraging audiences to “raise your voices against the authoritarianism, and let freedom ring.”

The release of Streets of Minneapolis marks another chapter in Springsteen’s long tradition of using music to challenge authority and spotlight pressing social issues — proving once again that the Boss doesn’t just play the guitar; he plays the conscience of America.
