Former President Bill Clinton has shared his perspective on one of the most discussed moments in recent political history—Hillary Clinton’s loss in the 2016 presidential election. During an interview on MSNBC with Joe Scarborough, Clinton reflected on the factors that contributed to the unexpected outcome and also offered insights into the 2024 presidential race.
Media’s Role in 2016
According to Clinton, the mainstream media played a significant role in shaping public perception of Hillary Clinton during the 2016 campaign. He pointed specifically to the intense focus on the controversy surrounding her use of a personal email server during her tenure as Secretary of State.
“The biggest issue was Hillary’s emails,” Clinton said, highlighting how the story dominated headlines and created a lasting negative narrative. He pointed out that it wasn’t just conservative outlets like Fox News amplifying the controversy but also mainstream media platforms.
Despite an investigation concluding that Hillary had not deliberately mishandled classified information, the narrative persisted. Clinton called the situation a “fabricated smear” that overshadowed her qualifications and policy proposals. He also criticized then-FBI Director James Comey’s decision to reopen the investigation just days before the election, saying it fueled doubts at a critical moment.

“She followed the rules as they existed, and yet the entire story was written as if she had done something terrible,” Clinton explained, defending his wife’s integrity.
A Closer Look at the 2024 Election
Looking ahead, Clinton shared his thoughts on the challenges Vice President Kamala Harris faces as the Democratic presidential nominee in 2024. After President Biden stepped down from the race in July, Harris stepped into the spotlight with little time to campaign and build voter familiarity.
“She’s essentially a stranger to many people,” Clinton said, noting the difficulty of introducing a new candidate so late in the race. He also pointed out that many voters still hold strong opinions about Donald Trump, who remains a polarizing figure.
Clinton acknowledged that voters may feel nostalgic for Trump’s pre-COVID economic record, even if much of it was inherited from the Obama administration. “There was no inflation, and people felt that,” he said, emphasizing how economic perceptions play a crucial role in elections.
Advice for Democrats
In reflecting on the Democratic strategy, Clinton stressed the importance of connecting with voters on issues that matter most to them, such as inflation and job security. While President Biden will leave office with a historic number of jobs created during his term, Clinton acknowledged that economic struggles, particularly inflation, have left many Americans feeling uncertain.
“You don’t have to sell out your beliefs, but you do have to meet people where they live,” Clinton said, urging Democrats to focus on practical solutions and voter engagement.
