Today, Apple announced the release of Digital ID, a new and safe method for American iPhone and Apple Watch owners to keep a digital copy of their U.S. passport in their Apple Wallet. Beginning this week, passengers will only need to use their device to pass through TSA checkpoints at more than 250 airports across the country; domestic flights will no longer require a physical passport.
Apple’s goal to completely replace the conventional wallet is being carried out with Digital ID. The feature, which is currently accessible in 12 states and Puerto Rico with more to follow, expands the list of accepted government-issued identification documents to include U.S. passports in addition to driver’s licenses and state IDs.
According to an Apple representative, “Apple Wallet already contains your cards, tickets, keys, and now — your passport.” “We are one step closer to enhancing the ease, security, and privacy of daily travel with digital ID.”
Seamless setup and secure by design
Digital ID is easy to get started with. Users can choose “Driver’s License or ID Cards” after opening the Wallet app and tapping the “+” button. After selecting Digital ID, users can verify their passport by scanning its embedded chip and photo page. Another layer of security is added when Apple’s sophisticated facial recognition system verifies identity with a brief selfie and a few simple head movements.
The passport can be presented similarly to Apple Pay once it has been added. At TSA checkpoints, the ID can be held close to a reader by quickly double-clicking the side button on an iPhone or Apple Watch. In order to maintain control over their data, travelers can verify exactly what information is being shared after authenticating using Face ID or Touch ID.
Privacy and convenience built in
As always, Apple’s design is centered on privacy. Devices are never unlocked or turned over to undergo an identity check, and Apple has no idea when or where users show their identification.
Although the feature is currently only available for domestic travel, Apple intends to extend its use to additional locations where identification or proof of age is needed, such as bars, event spaces, online services, and delivery apps. For instance, users could verify they’re over 21 to order alcohol without revealing personal details like their full name or address.
The future of identification
TSA is progressively rolling out support for Digital ID nationwide, but it is still in beta. Apple recommends travelers continue to carry their physical passport for now, especially for international travel.
Travelers are now closer than ever to a time when their iPhone or Apple Watch will securely, discreetly, and conveniently replace their wallet thanks to Apple’s Digital ID in Wallet.
