Rishi Sunak stresses the need for external control in managing AI risks at the AI Safety Summit.
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak emphasized the importance of government involvement in monitoring the risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI) and expressed that AI firms cannot be left to self-regulate. He made these remarks ahead of the AI Safety Summit, where a global declaration on managing AI risks was announced.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the transformative potential of AI in sectors like healthcare and education but stressed the need for governments and external oversight to ensure safety and protect citizens. Sunak highlighted the UK’s investment in AI risk management, with a £100 million task force becoming the Safety Institute, attracting top global researchers.
The AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park brought together over 100 world leaders, tech industry figures, and academics. During the event, a significant milestone was reached with the adoption of the Bletchley Declaration, the world’s first international statement on frontier AI. It called for global cooperation in addressing AI-related risks, particularly those related to privacy breaches and job displacement. The declaration emphasizes the importance of AI being human-centric, trustworthy, and responsible.

Dr. Caitlin Bentley, an AI education lecturer at King’s College London, lauded the declaration as an essential step in promoting responsible AI development but emphasized the need for increased investment in AI education to ensure equitable and responsible AI benefits.
The summit also featured a planned discussion with tech billionaire Elon Musk, who has been a vocal advocate for addressing AI risks. Musk’s participation in the event underscores the need for collaboration between countries and technology companies to manage and mitigate AI-related risks.
The summit attendees are focused on maximizing AI’s benefits while minimizing associated risks, with a particular focus on threats such as bioterrorism and cyber attacks. US Vice President Kamala Harris and China’s Vice Minister for Science and Technology, Wu Zhaohui, have also stressed the importance of global collaboration in addressing AI risks.
