New And Improved Google Maps
Law enforcement might not be happy with the latest update to Google Maps, which allows users to see the location of speed and mobile cameras. The update also allows users to see speed limits and speed cameras in more than 40 countries.
Google admits its goal is to help its customers avoid “speed traps” and getting ticketed.
Law enforcement is already displeased with the way Google has tipped off drivers to avoid encounters with police. According to Gizmodo, the New York Police Department sent a cease-and-desist letter to Google after it alerted users to the locations of DWI checkpoints. The NYPD accused the tech giant of acting irresponsibly, since alerting people about DWI checkpoints “only serves to aid impaired and intoxicated drivers to evade checkpoints and encourage reckless driving.”
But Google says its users have a right to the information, even if they choose to use it irresponsibly. A spokesperson for Google told Gizmodo that the company “believe[s] that informing drivers about upcoming speed traps allows them to be more careful and make safer decisions when they’re on the road.”
Speed traps aren’t the only warnings users will receive from Google Maps. The new updates also alert users to traffic jams and help them better plan their routes to avoid sitting in heavy traffic.
