Minnesota Governor Tim Walz responded Sunday to mounting concerns over a major fraud scandal after a viral video revealed an empty daycare center that had received millions in federal funding. The scandal, which has captured national attention, has been called one of the largest fraud schemes in U.S. history.

Governor Walz emphasized that he is taking strong action to hold those responsible accountable. A spokesperson noted, “The governor has worked for years to crack down on fraud, and he has asked the state legislature for expanded authority to take decisive action. Oversight has been strengthened, including investigations into these facilities—one of which has already been closed.”

In addition to these measures, Walz has enlisted an outside firm to audit payments to high-risk programs, permanently shut down the Housing Stabilization Services program, appointed a new statewide program integrity director, and supported ongoing criminal prosecutions.

The crisis escalated after FBI Director Kash Patel revealed that the fraud network uncovered in Minnesota is extensive. Patel described recent social media reports showing allegedly empty childcare centers and called them “just the tip of the iceberg.”

“The FBI is committed to dismantling large-scale fraud schemes that exploit federal programs,” Patel said. “Fraud that steals from taxpayers and robs vulnerable children will remain a top priority in Minnesota and nationwide.”

The allegations involve the nonprofit group Feeding Our Future, linked to a COVID-era food program. Investigations have led to 78 indictments, with prosecutors claiming that most of the meals intended for low-income children never existed, while taxpayer funds were allegedly diverted to luxury purchases and overseas real estate.

Governor Walz took to social media to reaffirm his commitment to Minnesota families. Sharing moments with members of the Somali community, he highlighted the state’s achievements: “#8 state for safety. #5 state to live in. #3 state for jobs. #2 state to raise a family, and #2 state to retire. We’ve made progress, but there’s more to do to deliver security, opportunity, and freedom to every Minnesotan. I won’t quit fighting until we’re #1.”

The governor faces ongoing scrutiny from residents and political figures concerned about how the state will prevent future abuse. Meanwhile, federal authorities continue to investigate and prosecute those involved, sending a clear message that fraud at the expense of taxpayers and children will not go unchecked.
