Sports Recap And Review, Just In Time For The Weekend
Serena Williams is in Wimbledon’s ladies final for the 11th time. Simona Halep will make her finals debut.
Youth (Halep is 27) challenges experience (Williams, 37, has won the singles title eight times). Williams lost in the finals last year to Angelique Kerber. With a win – and she has beaten Halep in nine of 10 matches – Williams will earn her record-tying 24th Grand Slam title.
The drama unfolds on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. ET on ESPN.
The men’s semifinals take place on Friday, with the final Sunday on ESPN at 9 a.m. Tough choice – heiner in the recliner or staying in bed. Your call.
NASCAR is under the lights on Saturday night at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, Ky. The Quaker State 400 goes off at 7:30 p.m. on NBCSN.
The British Open golf championship approaches, and so the John Deere Classic becomes the final tune-up for those players who don’t wish to rest up before heading across the pond. The top ones are apparently tuned. Let’s just say this event in Silvis, Illinois, lacks a bit of star power. Saturday’s third round and Sunday’s finale will be shown by CBS beginning at 3 p.m.
Growing ever more eager for football? Best we can do here is offer up the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders (2-1) at the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-1) on Saturday night at 7 p.m. on ESPN. Hamilton QB Jeremiah Masoli ranks second in the league in passing efficiency and Brandon Banks is tied for the CFL lead in receiving yards (420).
Sunday night baseball on ESPN at 7 p.m. has the Los Angeles Dodgers in Boston to face the Red Sox. This is a rematch of last year’s World Series, won in five games by Boston.
