Leave it to the Cleveland Browns to end a 17-game losing streak with a tie.
The Browns, winless all of last season, rallied to tie the Pittsburgh Steelers 21-21 and that’s the way the game ended after a scoreless overtime. It was the first tie during the first week of the NFL season since 1971.
A few quarterbacks made their return from injury, with mixed success. Ryan Tannehill, out the last three games in 2016 and all of 2017 with knee problems, led the Miami Dolphins to a 27-20 win over the Tennessee Titans that included four hours of delays for lightning. DeShaun Watson, who missed the final nine games last season, was back for the Houston Texans but fumbled his first snap, setting up a New England Patriots touchdown. The Pats won 27-20. And Andrew Luck, who also missed all of last season, returned for the Indianapolis Colts, but they lost 34-23 at home to the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Green Bay Packers, who were down 20-0 and looking at playing without Aaron Rodgers (knee), got their quarterback back and rallied to beat the Chicago Bears 24-23. Rodgers threw three touchdown passes in the second half while barely able to put weight on his left leg. The Packers scored 17 points in the fourth quarter.
Weather Delays:
The final round of the PGA Tour’s BMW Championship was postponed to Monday due to heavy rain outside of Philadelphia. Justin Rose leads by a stroke. … NASCAR’s regular-season finale at Indianapolis Motor Speedway was also postponed to Monday by rain. The playoffs begin next weekend.
College Football:
Alabama, Clemson and Georgia remain 1-2-3 atop the Associated Press college football poll. Florida, which was 25th last week, dropped out after losing 27-16 to Kentucky, which it had beaten 31 straight times. The Wildcats hadn’t won in Gainesville, Fla., since 1979.
Elsewhere:
The Atlanta Braves homered three times in a six-run ninth inning to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-5 on Sunday.
In the WNBA Finals, the Seattle Storm beat the Washington Mystics 75-73 to go up 2-0 in their best-of-five series.
