A Sports Filled Weekend It Was
First, a safe and Happy July 4th to all…
Dustin Johnson kept his composure down a bit of a rocky stretch and Jason Day did not. So Johnson, in his first start since winning the U.S. Open, bagged a 1-shot victor over Scott Piercy in the WGC Championship-Bridgestone, making up six shots on Day over the final two days at Firestone in Akron, Ohio.

Day did not hit a green in regulation over the final six holes.
Johnson is now ranked No. 2 in the world and the favorite going to the British Open in two weeks.
On the LPGA Tour, defending champion Brooke Henderson earned a four-stroke victory Sunday at the LPGA Cambia Portland Classic. Henderson, 18, is the first wire-to-wire winner at Portland since the tournament went to a 72-hole event in 2013. Stacy Lewis was second.
Tennis

Sam Querrey made sure Novak Djokovic would not win a fifth consecutive major, eliminating the world’s No. 1 player in four sets at Wimbledon on Saturday….Serena Williams won her 300th Grand Slam match, dispatching Annika Beck 6-3, 6-0 on Sunday in 51 minutes.
Baseball

Stephen Strasburg, fresh from the disabled list, pitched 6 2/3 innings of no-hit ball and the Washington Nationals homered six times to beat the Reds 12-1…Toronto Blue Jays designated hitter Edwin Encarnacio was suspended for one game for inadvertently bumping an umpire on Friday. He will appeal the suspension….Mark Texeira hit his 400th and 401st career home runs in the New York Yankees’ 6-3 win over the San Diego Padres. He is the fifth switch-hitter to reach 400 HRs….The New York Mets beat the Chicago Cubs 14-3 to finish a sweep of their four-game series.
Elsewhere
Brad Keselowski led for 115 of the 161 laps Saturday night at Daytona International Speedway, stayed ahead of the many wrecks behind him and won the Coke Zero 400. It was his third Sprint Cup series victory this season and his first career win at Daytona….NBA free agency began on Friday and the marquee player, Kevin Durant, has yet to decide where he’ll play. The Boston Celtics and Golden State Warriors appear to be favorites. The biggest winner may well be Mike Conley, who re-signed with the Memphis Grizzlies for a staggering $153 million over five years….Iceland, a surprise qualifier for the quarterfinals, got its comeuppance from host France, losing 5-2 on Sunday in Euro 2016 soccer competition. France led 4-0 at halftime. Germany beat Italy 6-5 on penalty kicks on Saturday. Portgugal will play Wales in a Wednesday semifinal and Germany will play France on Thursday.
