Trump Calls Upon Congress For Immigration Laws
“Congress should come back to D.C. now and FIX THE IMMIGRATION LAWS!” Donald Trump tweeted on Monday morning, sounding frustrated with the lack of progress on his campaign promise to close the Southern Border. Congress is on a two-week recess right now.
Trump has Constitutional powers to call a special session of Congress. However, he has not given official orders for lawmakers to return to Washington, DC.
Trump wrote his tweet a week after his administration made several controversial proposals to address illegal immigration. First, Trump hinted that he planned to transport migrants to “sanctuary cities.” White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders didn’t confirm or deny the legally questionable plan, but called it “an option on the table.”
“The president likes the idea, and Democrats have said they want these individuals in their communities,” Sanders said. “So let’s see if it works and everyone gets a win out of it… Certainly, this wouldn’t be our first choice, because ideally, we wouldn’t be dealing with the massive influx of illegal immigrants coming across the border.”
Sanders denied rumors that Trump offered to pardon Kevin McAleenan, the U.S. Customs and Border Commissioner, if he broke the law in the course of stopping illegal immigrants from crossing the border.
“We’re a country of laws and we have a president who supports that and is not asking anybody to do anything outside of those bounds. In fact, he’s asking Congress to step up and give greater legal standing so they can do more to stop this crisis. No one’s trying to skirt the law and certainly not being encouraged by the president to do so,” Sanders said on ABC This Week.
