Trump still wants Greenland
Donald Trump raised a lot of eyebrows when reports surfaced that he wanted to buy the island nation of Greenland. Government officials in Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, responded by saying they were “not for sale.” But Trump added fuel to the fire this week by reportedly joking about trading Puerto Rico to Denmark in exchange for Greenland.
In response, many Puerto Ricans joked that they’d be happy with such a trade.
“I don’t know about you, but I have no problem with being sold to Denmark,” Gabriel René, a Puerto Rican executive, tweeted.
Social media users pointed out that Denmark has the best education system in the world, free health care, and that its residents report unusually high levels of well-being.
“Denmark is the country with the best education in the world. At least there, they must know what Puerto Rico is, unlike many gringos, who think it is a Mexican town,” tweeted @SanMelquiades.
After the Danish prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, called Trump’s proposal to buy Greenland “absurd,” Trump slammed her as “nasty” and said “absurd” was a “terrible word” to use.
People close to Trump confirm that he was serious about buying Greenland. The island, which sits near the Arctic Circle, is rich in natural resources.
