A World Series marked by blowouts came down to a closely-played and dramatic Game 7 on Wednesday night. The San Francisco Giants edged the Kansas City Royals 3-2 to take the decisive game and win their third championship in five years.
Left-handed pitcher Madison Bumgarner, working on two days’ rest, threw five innings of shutout relief to carry the Giants past the Royals. Bumgarner got the final out on a pop up with a runner at third base. The 25-year-old was named Most Valuable Player. He had won two starts in the Series and wrapped it up in relief, pitching 52 2/3 innings – a record – in postseason play. His career line in World Series play: 5-0, with an ERA of 0.25. He has allowed one run in 36 innings, with 31 strikeouts.
Seven of the previous nine World Series that came down to a seventh game were won by the home team but the Royals could not touch Bumgarner in their own park.
“It’s historic what this kid has done. Really, truly amazing,” said Giants manager Bruce Bochy.
Michael Morse drove in the winning run in the fourth, snapping a 2-2 tie and neither team scored again. With Bumgarner on the mound, the Giants probably figured they had all the runs they needed.
Today’s question
Place your bets now. Can the Giants come back next year and do it again?
