Serena defeats Maria, again
Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams faced off for the 22nd time in history on Monday night and for the 19th time Williams came out victorious. The two women faced off at the 2019 U.S. Open just a year after Williams suffered her own loss to Naomi Osaka.
The 37-year-old put on a flawless performance that sadly, for spectators, was drama-free as Williams took home a 6-1, 6-1 victory. While Williams made beating Sharapova easy, according to the champion going up against the Russian brings out her “best tennis.”
That’s exactly what she did for the match that only lasted less than an hour. Not only did Williams beat Sharapova quickly, but she also did it with twice as many points, 56-28
“I always said her ball somehow lands in my strike zone,” Williams said. “I don’t know. It’s just perfect for me.” Sharapova, who is ranked at number 87, is keeping her head held high.
“Bottom line is I believe in my ability,” Sharapova said after the match. “You can write me off. There are many people that can write me off, especially after going down 6-1, 6-1. As long as it’s not the person that’s inside of you, you’ll be OK.”
