Congresswoman welcome with cheers
Rep. Ilhan Omar, a newly elected Congresswoman from Minnesota, arrived home to cheers on Thursday. Omar was the target of highly controversial Tweets from President Donald Trump, in which he accused Omar of “hating America” and said she should “go back to where [she] came from.”
Omar was born in Somalia. She spent time in a Kenyan refugee camp before immigrating to America as a child.
A crowd of Minnesotans chanted “Welcome home Ilhan!” as the Congresswoman arrived. She addressed the crowd through a megaphone.
“We are going to continue to be a nightmare to this president, because his policies are a nightmare to us. We are not deterred, we are not frightened, we are ready,” Omar said.
At a Trump rally in North Carolina on Wednesday, the audience chanted “send her back!” when Trump mentioned Omar. Trump initially disavowed those chants. However, he took to Twitter to bash Omar as “foul-mouthed” and said the people of Minnesota “can’t stand her.”
“It is amazing how the Fake News Media became ‘crazed’ over the chant ‘send her back’ by a packed Arena (a record) crowd in the Great State of North Carolina, but is totally calm & accepting of the most vile and disgusting statements made by the three Radical Left Congresswomen,” Trump tweeted. “They even covered a tiny staged crowd as they greeted Foul Mouthed Omar in Minnesota, a State which I will win in #2020 because they can’t stand her and her hatred of our Country, and they appreciate all that I have done for them (opening up mining and MUCH more) which has led to the best employment & economic year in Minnesota’s long and beautiful history!”
