President Donald Trump Cancels Summit With North Korean Leader, Kim Jong Un
The most anticipated political event of the year was just cancelled by President Trump, for reasons claiming Kim Jong Un was instigating problems. President Trump issued a letter to Kim Jong Un officially cancelling the June 12 summit in Singapore.
The announcement was made after North Korea reported that they dismantled tunnels at its only nuclear test site, witnessed by foreign reporters. This is referring to a statement by Kim saying that Vice President Mike Pence is a “political dummy” for comparing North Korea to Libya, days after Pyongyang rejected comparisons to the North African state.
The comparison to Libya is in regards to when the country gave up their nuclear ambitions in 2003 in exchange for removal of sanctions, which is the same deal North Korea is facing. This also compared to the type of leadership these countries have in regards to Moammar Gadhafi who was over-thrown in a Western-supported coup and killed in 2011.
In the letter Trump says, “Sadly, because of the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel that it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting.” The letter ends saying that if North Korea re-considers “this most important meeting” that Kim is free to contact Trump.
This instance has some questioning whether Trump planned this summit to prompt denuclearization and the releasing of the U.S. detainees, without having to commit to the summit. When many see that Trump took offense to the negative remarks about Pence. This leaves many to question whether there will be a summit with Trump and Kim.
