New Pharmacy Consulting Options Offer Affordable Prescriptions
Starting July 1, there will be a new payment option for prescriptions in Florida, offering patients savings on their medications.
A gag clause that is not commonly-known about is pharmacies are not allowed to tell customers about the price difference, whether paying with or without insurance. Florida is now giving access to prescription price comparisons and the option to pay with or without insurance.
For patients with insurance, pharmacies used to require prescriptions to be processed though insurance. Now there are options to process through insurance or cash, depending on the medication. In some cases, medications can be less expensive without going through insurance or offer a cheaper generic substitute medication.
Some medications will remain more affordable through insurance, such as newer medications that have less generic alternatives available. All patients need to do is consult with their pharmacist to see if there are more affordable options.
Many of the pharmacies have seen filled prescriptions sit on the counters for month, without being picked up because the patient cannot afford their medication. Learn more about this initiative in the video above.
