Kylie Jenner Facing Backlash For “Handmaid’s Tale”-Themed Party
Kylie Jenner is getting heat for hosting a “Handmaid’s Tale”-themed party, which many are calling “tone-deaf” and “embarrassing.” Guests at the party donned red robes and white bonnets, much like the oppressed female characters in the fictional Gilead.
“The Handmaid’s Tale” is a dystopian novel by Margaret Atwood about a fictional future where women have no rights. The novel inspired a popular TV series, which Jenner describes as her favorite show.
Jenner allegedly welcomed guests by saying, “Praise be, ladies. Welcome, welcome. You know ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ is my favorite show ever… welcome to Gilead.”
The party, complete with Handmaid-themed drinks, angered many fans, who said Jenner clearly doesn’t get the point of the show and was making light of the oppression of women.
“This is so wrong on so many levels… To celebrate the slavery of women is diabolically moronic and shows how truly ignorant Kylie and her mates are… Go back to school. They obviously do not understand the premise of the book or TV series… It’s embarrassing,” one commenter wrote on Instagram.
Buzzfeed News reminded readers that the trademark “Handmaid” costume, which includes a white bonnet and red dress, has been worn by women protesting against policies they believe affect them negatively.
“In fact, the iconic handmaid costume consisting of red robes and white bonnets — designed to act as blinkers to prevent the women from looking at their surroundings — have become synonymous with protest over recent years, with women wearing similar attire to fight back on issues,” Buzzfeed reported.
