Peace Summit in Korea
Since the Korean War, there has been no North Korean leader to enter South Korea, until now.
Friday the Dictator of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, meets with the President of South Korea, Moon Jea In, for a peace summit to discuss uniting the peninsula.
The meeting took place in the Demilitarized Zone, in the truce village of Panmunjom.
There was a heavy emphasis on organizing the meeting point to promote peace between the two countries. The goal was to design a symbolic setting that “embodied the theme of, ‘Welcoming, Consideration, Peace, and Hope'”.
With elaborate details such as, the leaders being seated 2,018 millimeters apart to represent the year in which the meeting took place. They also planted a pine tree that dates back to 1953 to commemorate this meeting, using water and soil from both countries to symbolize prosperity in unification.
In 1953 there was an official armistice signed, while peace was never officially declared. This is how North and South Korea were divided, meaning that the war never officially ended.
The meeting with the two leaders was civil and Kim Jong-un joked that he would no longer be interrupting South Korea’s sleep with missile testing. This also reinforces the recent declaration by Kim Jong-un to end missile testing, pulling back from nuclear testing.
The leaders agreed to work towards a peaceful unification, promising that by the end of this year the Korean War will officially be over. They also agreed to completely halt hostile acts towards each other.
The broadcast of this meeting streamed worldwide, accept for North Korea. The reason being that North Korea doesn’t like to broadcast live events in-case something goes wrong during transmission.
This meeting of the Korean leaders is to prepare for the ultimate meeting between Kim Jong-un and President Donald Trump, anticipated for later this year.
