Drag Queens Teaching Children Acceptance

Everyone remembers going to the public library for story hour as a kid, but has evolved to Drag Queen Story Hour. This new program is teaching kids about being gender fluid while promoting awareness and positivity.

This program was launched to teach kids about gender diversity and promoting an open discussion in the goal of preventing the stigma against people dressing in drag. Children are impressionable at a young age which is an important time to create an open discussion, so children can identify their gender preference without feeling they have to hide their identity.

The New York Public Library started this program to expose children to more people who are gender fluid, while educating children on gender preference roles. Drag Queen Angel Elektra decided to participate in this program because growing up Elektra felt that she had to be secretive for being homosexual, hoping this program will help the younger generation through their journey.

Elektra was raised in a Christian family so she felt that she could not come out and express himself in the way she wanted. She goes onto say that growing up was like living two separate lives, but felt could be more herself as she got older while feeling more accepted.

The program features a special book that teaches children about gender preferences called ‘Everyone Is Different’. This book gives a kid-friendly channel to discuss this life-altering topic that promote awareness and teaches acceptance.
