The House of Representatives vote to impeach Trump
In a highly partisan vote, President Trump was formally impeached last night by the House of Representatives for obstruction of congress and abuse of power. No Republicans voted to impeach, and only a handful of Democrats voted against it.
As the vote was taking place, Trump was at a campaign rally in Battle Creek, Michigan. Battle Creek is represented in Congress by Rep. Justin Amash, an Independent who left the Republican Party last year. Amash has been outspoken in his support for impeaching Trump and voted yes to both articles of impeachment on Tuesday.
At the rally, Trump told the audience, “They’re not after me, they’re after you.” Trump seemed upbeat, telling the audience it “didn’t feel like” he had been impeached.
“It doesn’t really feel like we’re being impeached,” Trump said. “The country is doing better than ever before. We did nothing wrong. We did nothing wrong and we have tremendous support in the Republican Party, like we’ve never had before nobody’s ever had this kind of support, but this sacred season in our country is thriving and it’s thriving truly like it has never.”
Sen. Mitch McConnell, the highest-ranking Republican in the Senate, said he wasn’t worried about the upcoming impeachment trial. In fact, he said he believes House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is “afraid” to send the impeachment articles to the Senate.
On Twitter, Trump agreed. “Pelosi feels her phony impeachment HOAX is so pathetic she is afraid to present it to the Senate, which can set a date and put this whole SCAM into default if they refuse to show up! The Do Nothings are so bad for our Country!” he wrote.
