Danish Brewery Carlsberg Aims to Reduce Environmental Impact
The Carlsberg beer company has introduced a new way to reduce their use of plastic. From now on, the company will use a specially formulated glue to package their multi-packs of beer. The new form of packaging is called Snap Pack, as the glue creates a snapping sound when separating cans.
While plastic rings typically hold a six or four pack of beer together, these have been known to tangle around wildlife and sea animals or end up in their stomachs, and generally clog up the environment with plastic waste. The Carlsberg Group, headquartered in Denmark, decided to work towards reducing the amount of waste they create by developing this glue. This will be a world first in beer packaging. The glue is so subtle that the cans appear to stay together with nothing holding them.
According to Carlsberg’s Sustainability Director, Simon Boas Hoffmeyer, the move away from traditional packaging will reduce the company’s volume of plastic waste by 1,200 tons. Hoffmeyer also stated that this move would reduce the company’s overall use of plastic material by 76 percent.
This is just one of the several steps that the brewing corporation plans in order to help reduce their ecological footprint. To commemorate the new snap packs, a mermaid statue made of Carlsberg cans was created. This is similar to the infamous statue commissioned by the founder of the company’s son in 1913, a tourist attraction in Denmark.
