This will be the third time the games are hosted in Australia.
The Tokyo 2020 Olympics are slated to get underway this Friday, in spite of quarantined athletes and last-minute withdrawals. While this year’s games haven’t actually started yet (and according to officials, could still see a full cancellation at the 11th hour), the members of the International Olympic Committee are already looking toward the future of the event.

Today, IOC President Thomas Bach, who is currently in Tokyo preparing for Friday’s games, announced the venue for the next Olympic games to be held in 2032: the city of Brisbane, Australia.
“Brisbane 2032 is the first future host to have been elected under, and to have fully benefited from, the new flexible approach to electing Olympic hosts,” Bach said. The approach he referred to is a new initiative put forth by the committee to utilize existing sporting venues for the Olympics in order to cut down on the waste produced by creating new venues as necessary.

“The Brisbane 2032 vision and Games plan fit into long-term regional and national strategies for social and economic development in Queensland and Australia,” said Bach.
While these will be the first games held in Brisbane, they will be the third games held in Australia overall, with previous entries including Melbourne in 1956 and Sydney in 2000.
