We care about one guy. The guy who has his hands on the ball every play.
Yes, the center.
No, the quarterback.
The NFL game has become so quarterback-centric that it monopolizes sports-talk radio, fan gabsites, fantasy football and the national discussion. So, rather than seem out of step while analyzing the zone-blocking scheme, let’s get caught up on QB fun and games in the NFL. These are busy times.
• Redskins: Signed Matt Sanchez (look up the Butt Fumble on the internet) to back up Colt McCoy after the loss of Alex Smith (broken leg, out for the season). Smith’s injury is considered a six-to-eight months rehab and he’s 34. Nothing good can come of this. Unless McCoy is the real, uh, Colt.
• Titans. Marcus Mariota (stinger)) will try to play this week. Anything that spares us the sight of Blaine Gabbert is a blessing.
• Buccaneers. Jameis Winston returns as the starter and Ryan Fitzpatrick goes back to the bench. Considering the attention paid to this, one would think it matters.
• Jaguars. Blake Bortles will remain the starter. This is good news for … well, uh, Blake Bortles. When the next two guys in line are Cody Kessler and Landry Jones, your worries are few. Bortles was sacked six times in Sunday’s loss to Pittsburgh, so he may not be the Jags’ only problem.
• Packers: Aaron Rodgers and coach Mike McCarthy are reportedly at odds about the direction of the offense. This won’t end well for McCarthy because there are numerous large men who would be willing to freeze on Green Bay’s sidelines, but there aren’t many like Rodgers and McCarthy is now being viewed as the guy “wasting Aaron Rodgers’ prime.” In 2005, when he was the offensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers, McCarthy lobbied them to use the first pick of the draft on a quarterback … Alex Smith. Rodgers, who slipped to the bottom of the round, hasn’t ever quite forgiven him.
