TV Show To Blame For Young Girl’s Suicide Attempt?
Netflix released the the second season of ’13 Reasons Why’ last week. The show touches on some tough issues including rape, drug and alcohol abuse, bullying, and suicide. After a 15 year-old Florida girl watched the television series, she attempted suicide. Fortunately, she is alive and in recovery. Her mother is blaming the series, saying that it puts the idea in young peoples minds. Parents Council agrees and says that the show glamorizes suicide.
The creators of the show had no intent for it to have this impact on young people. Rather, they wanted to start a conversation and help face the issue head on. The show also has a warning at the beginning stating that there are tough topics in the show and they should speak with an adult about them.
