In a dramatic twist that’s sent shockwaves through both sides of the Atlantic, U.S. President Donald Trump has launched a fierce attack on what he called the “corrupt” BBC, following the sudden resignation of Director-General Tim Davie and BBC News Chief Deborah Turness.
The resignations come after an internal inquiry revealed that a BBC Panorama documentary had edited a 2021 speech by President Trump, making it appear as though he encouraged his supporters to march to the U.S. Capitol and “fight like hell.” The findings ignited a political firestorm, prompting accusations of bias and censorship at the heart of Britain’s national broadcaster.
Speaking on Truth Social, President Trump celebrated the resignations as proof of long-standing claims of media manipulation. “The top people in the BBC, including Tim Davie, the boss, are all quitting or fired because they were caught ‘doctoring’ my very good (perfect!) speech of January 6th,” he wrote. “These are very dishonest people who tried to step on the scales of a Presidential Election. What a terrible thing for democracy!”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt echoed the sentiment, describing the BBC as “anti-Trump fake news” that had “lost the trust of the public.”
Inside the BBC, the mood was somber but reflective. Mr. Davie admitted that “mistakes were made” and said he must “take ultimate responsibility.” Ms. Turness, who joined the BBC in 2022 after leading ITN, said she was stepping down because “the ongoing controversy around the Panorama episode has caused damage to the BBC – an institution that I love.”
The resignations follow a scathing Prescott Report, which accused the corporation of systemic editorial bias, including misleading edits and one-sided reporting on international and social issues.
Politicians from across the spectrum reacted swiftly. UK Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said the resignations were “long overdue,” adding that the BBC’s “culture problem runs far deeper.” Reform Party leader Nigel Farage called it “the beginning of wholesale change,” while former Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned he would withhold his licence fee unless the corporation fully reformed.
BBC Chairman Samir Shah described the moment as “a sad day” but said he respected the decisions made by both executives. “Tim has given two decades of dedicated service,” he said. “However, the BBC must now rebuild public trust through transparency and reform.”
The controversy has also reignited debate over the broadcaster’s funding model ahead of next year’s Royal Charter renewal, a process that will determine how the BBC operates and is financed in the future.
While the full fallout is still unfolding, one thing is clear — the BBC faces a defining moment in its century-long history. With global scrutiny mounting and trust on the line, the next chapter will determine whether Britain’s most iconic broadcaster can truly live up to its promise of impartiality in a new media age.
