A deadly spree on Bourbon Street leaves a city in mourning
A night of celebration in New Orleans’ famous French Quarter turned tragic early Wednesday morning when an SUV barreled into crowds on Bourbon Street, leaving at least 10 people dead and 30 others injured.
The incident happened around 3:15 a.m. as people gathered to ring in the New Year. Witnesses say the driver sped into the crowd near the intersection of Bourbon and Canal Streets before stepping out of the vehicle and firing a weapon. Police on the scene returned fire as chaos erupted.
“It was terrifying,” said one witness. “I saw people running and heard gunshots—it was like a nightmare.” Videos from the scene show bystanders scrambling for safety, while first responders rushed to help the injured.
Emergency teams quickly arrived to treat victims and transport them to nearby hospitals. Sadly, officials have confirmed 10 lives were lost in the tragedy. The area remains closed as investigators work to uncover what led to the horrific attack.
