Is This New Bill Going to Be a Problem for Americans?
AI is creeping into every part of our lives and most of us don’t even realize it. But behind the scenes, something major is brewing in Congress and it’s not good for anyone who wants even basic protection from how artificial intelligence is used.
A new Trump-backed bill is trying to block all 50 states from creating any of their own AI rules for the next ten years. That’s right. If a state wants to stop deepfake scams, protect workers from biased hiring bots, or make sure your personal data isn’t abused by some shady algorithm, they’d be banned from doing it. And if they try, they risk losing federal broadband funding. Seriously.
Big Tech is loving it. Companies like Google, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft are backing this all the way. They say it’s about avoiding a patchwork of regulations. But let’s be real. What they really want is ten years of no questions asked. No oversight. No accountability.
And while the bill quietly moves through Congress, some lawmakers are raising red flags. Josh Hawley and Marjorie Taylor Greene aren’t usually on the same page as Democrats, but even they’re questioning why states should be gagged while tech giants write their own rules. Experts are warning this could set the U.S. up for a disaster, where harmful AI systems spread with zero guardrails.
The truth is Congress isn’t known for acting fast. If this bill goes through and states are forced to stay silent, then nobody will be watching how AI is used in real time. That’s not regulation. That’s a free pass to exploit people for profit.
This isn’t innovation. It’s a power grab dressed up as progress. It’s the kind of move that says protecting billion-dollar tech companies is more important than protecting everyday Americans. And the people who always talk about freedom and state rights are the ones handing those rights away.
The scariest part? Most Americans don’t even know this is happening.
If AI is going to be part of our daily lives, we need the power to ask questions, demand fairness, and call out abuse when it happens. This bill takes that power away. And we should all be asking why.
