Trading Talent for Pennies: What Was Miami Thinking?
NFL fans were left scratching their heads after the Miami Dolphins traded star cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers in a move that looks more like a salary dump than a smart football decision.
Let’s break it down.
Ramsey, one of the most elite defenders in the league, was just heating up in Miami. Coming off a solid season with 60 tackles and two interceptions, he was set to be a cornerstone of the Dolphins’ defense. But instead of building around him, the Dolphins shipped him off, along with tight end Jonnu Smith and a seventh-round pick, for Minkah Fitzpatrick and a fifth-rounder. Really?
Sure, Fitzpatrick is talented and has history with Miami. But the optics here? Not great. Ramsey’s contract was big, and this deal smells a lot like a cap space decision. Especially when you consider that Ramsey is now earning $26.6 million in 2025 thanks to a built-in raise. The Dolphins clearly weren’t up for paying that.
Meanwhile, the Steelers just got scary good. Pairing Ramsey with Darius Slay Jr. and Joey Porter Jr. makes that secondary look stacked. Oh, and don’t forget the Steelers also grabbed Jonnu Smith, who reunites with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith from their Falcons days. This is a win-win for Pittsburgh, strengthening both their defense and offense while hardly giving up anything major in return.
Miami fans, on the other hand, are rightfully wondering what the front office is thinking. Letting go of a top-tier corner, losing offensive depth, and gaining… a bit of breathing room on the books?
If this was supposed to be a bold, strategic move, it missed the mark. It looks more like waving a white flag.
Cap space is important, no doubt. But star players like Ramsey don’t grow on trees, and giving him up to a Super Bowl-hungry team like the Steelers just adds salt to the wound.
So, did the Dolphins just dump Jalen Ramsey for cap space? It sure looks like it.
And Steelers fans? You just got gifted.
