Mueller investigation officially begins
Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who headed the two-year probe into whether President Donald Trump conspired with the Russians to influence the 2016 election, is testifying at a pair of Congressional hearings today. Mueller will appear before the House Judiciary Committee and the Intelligence Committee. The hearings appear to be the final word on whether Democrats should impeach Donald Trump or move on and focus on the 2020 election.
“Over the course of my career, I’ve seen a number of challenges to our democracy. The Russian government’s effort to interfere in our election is among the most serious,” Mueller said in his testimony. He said President Trump could be charged with obstruction of justice when he leaves office. However, Mueller declined to indict Trump because it is against historical precedent to charge a sitting president with a crime.
Trump hit back at Mueller on Twitter, standing by his contention that the investigation was a “witch hunt” that produced no evidence of criminal wrongdoing.
“So Democrats and others can illegally fabricate a crime, try pinning it on a very innocent President, and when he fights back against this illegal and treasonous attack on our Country, they call It Obstruction? Wrong! Why didn’t Robert Mueller investigate the investigators?” Trump tweeted Wednesday morning.
Trump also questioned why Mueller brought a personal attorney to the hearings.
“It was NEVER agreed that Robert Mueller could use one of his many Democrat Never Trumper lawyers to sit next to him and help him with his answers. This was specifically NOT agreed to, and I would NEVER have agreed to it. The Greatest Witch Hunt in U.S. history, by far!” Trump tweeted.
