Reviewing All The Top Weekend Sports Action
The Boston Bruins defeated the St. Louis Blues 5-1 on Sunday night to force a seventh game in the NHL’s Stanley Cup finals.
Game 7 takes place in Boston on Wednesday night. The last time there was a seventh game for the championship was 2011, when the Bruins defeated the Vancouver Canucks 4-0.
Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask was outstanding, making 28 saves, including one where the puck landed on his back but never got into the net. The Bruins built a 3-0 lead in staving off the Blues’ hopes of clinching their first NHL title.
The NBA’s title could be decided on Monday night when the Toronto Raptors, with a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series, meet the Golden State Warriors in Oakland, California, at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
NASCAR:
No, you didn’t miss the race. NASCAR’s Firekeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway was postponed due to rain. The race will be run on Monday at 5 p.m. ET and can be seen on FS1. NASCAR will then take Sunday off before returning for the second half of its season.
Golf:
Rory McIlroy carded a 9-under 61 on Sunday in the RBC Canadian Open to win by shots. Shane Lowry and Webb Simpson were seven strokes back. The victory was McIlroy’s 16th on the PGA Tour. McIroy had nine birdies and an eagle on Sunday.
Elsewhere:
Middleweight Gennady Golovkin scored a fourth-round knockout of previously unbeaten Steven Rolls on Saturday night in New York, possibly setting up a return title bout with Canelo Alvarez, who defeated him in September of 2018 in a controversial decision.
Former Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz was shot and wounded in the Dominican Republic in what was described as an attempted robbery. His agent says he is in stable condition.
The Washington Nationals tied a major league record with home runs on four consecutive at-bats on Sunday in a 5-2 victory over the San Diego Padres.
Sir Winston pulled an upset and won the Belmont Stakes on Saturday in New York. The Triple Crown series ended with different winners in each of the three races. At Santa Anita in California, two horses died in two days to bring the season total to 29. The track has refused entreaties by the state commission to close.
Rafael Nadal won the French Open for the 12th time, defeating Dominic Thiem on Sunday in five sets. Ashleigh Barty won the women’s title on Saturday.
