Tiger On Top With PGA Championship Win
Four back surgeries and a rash of personal problems faded away on Sunday as Tiger Woods won the PGA Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta, marking his first victory in more than five years.
Woods won by two strokes over Billy Horschel. Justin Rose finished fourth earned the FedEx championship as Woods capped his much-watched comeback with an emotional victory.
“There was a point in time I didn’t know if I’d ever do this again,” Woods said after collecting his 80th victory. Pars on the final two holes nailed down this elusive triumph for Woods, 42.
NFL:
Upsets galore! The winless Buffalo Bills waltzed into Minneapolis and smacked down the Minnesota Vikings 27-6 behind rookie quarterback Josh Allen. The Detroit Lions got their first 100-yard rushing game since Thanksgiving of 2013 – a span of 70 games – and crushed the New England Patriots 26-10. Rookie Kerryon Johnson picked up 101 yards on 16 carries.
The Washington Redskins drubbed the Green Bay Packers 31-17. The New Orleans Saints won 43-37 in overtime over the Atlanta Falcons, with QB Drew Brees having a hand in five touchdowns (two by rushing, including the game-winner). And the San Francisco 49ers, who fell 38-27 to the Kansas City Chiefs and the hot hand of Patrick Mahomes (three more TD passes, 13 in three games), appear to have lost QB Jimmy Garoppolo (left ACL) for the season.
College Football:
The Associated Press poll is unchanged at the top. Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, Ohio State and LSU make up the top five. Kentucky, after upsetting Mississippi State (15th last week) is in the poll for the first time since 2007, ranked 17th.
Elsewhere:
The Atlanta Braves clinched the National League East division title on Saturday night. Blake Snell set a club record by recording his 21st victory as the Tampa Bay Rays stayed alive in the American League wild-card race with a 5-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Snell struck out 11 over 6 2/3 scoreless innings.
Kyle Busch claimed a place in the second round of the NASCAR playoffs with a win – his seventh of the season – at Richmond on Saturday night. … Anthony Joshua retained his heavyweight boxing titles Saturday night in London, stopping Alexander Povetkin in seven rounds.
