Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), a prominent member of the progressive “Squad,” is facing sharp criticism after laughing during an interview in which she mocked tributes to conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated earlier this week.
Speaking with independent outlet Zeteo, Omar dismissed the notion that Kirk had been a champion of civil debate. Instead, she accused him of fueling division for more than a decade, pointing to his controversial remarks on George Floyd, Juneteenth, and racial justice.
“There are a lot of people who are talking about him just wanting to have a civil debate,” Omar said with a chuckle. “These people are full of s***. It’s important for us to call that out while we feel both anger and sadness.”
Her comments landed just one day after Kirk, 31, was fatally shot by a sniper outside Utah Valley University. His sudden death has deepened partisan divides across the country, with some Democrats and educators sparking outrage for appearing to celebrate the tragedy.
During the interview, Omar criticized Kirk’s track record on social media and at public events. She cited his history of denigrating George Floyd, dismissing Juneteenth as a “race-based holiday,” and promoting rhetoric that she argued minimized the lived experiences of Black Americans.
“What I do know for sure is that Charlie was someone who once said guns save lives after a school shooting,” Omar said. “He was someone willing to debate and downplay the death of George Floyd. And there is nothing more messed up than pretending his words and actions haven’t been recorded for the last decade.”
Kirk, who rose to prominence as the founder of Turning Point USA, was hailed by supporters as a trailblazer in conservative activism. His organization became known for galvanizing young Republicans on college campuses with fiery speeches and headline-grabbing events.
But to critics on the left, Kirk symbolized polarization. His biting commentary on racial justice movements and provocative social media posts often ignited fierce backlash. In one 2021 broadcast, he referred to George Floyd as a “scumbag” while repeating disputed claims about his death. In later years, he doubled down on rejecting Juneteenth, arguing it was about “anti-Americanism” rather than emancipation.
Despite his divisive presence, Kirk maintained an outsized influence in U.S. politics, amassing millions of followers across TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. He was considered by allies a bold defender of conservative ideals, while opponents saw him as a driver of anger and resentment.
Omar’s pointed remarks have now thrust her into the center of a heated national debate. For critics, her laughter came across as callous in the wake of a tragedy. For supporters, it was a blunt acknowledgment of Kirk’s legacy as they saw it—one that prioritized provocation over dialogue.
As partisan tensions escalate, Omar’s interview is likely to fuel further discussion about how America remembers its most polarizing figures, and whether leaders should speak with restraint or honesty when legacies are still raw.
