The world is pausing to honor the life and legacy of Jesse Jackson, who passed away peacefully Tuesday morning at the age of 84, surrounded by his family.
In a heartfelt statement, the Jackson family described their father as “a servant leader — not only to our family, but to the oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked around the world.” They added, “We shared him with the world, and in return, the world became part of our extended family.” The family has asked supporters everywhere to carry forward his lifelong mission of justice, equality, and love.
For more than five decades, Reverend Jackson stood at the forefront of the American civil rights movement. A close associate of Martin Luther King Jr., Jackson was present on April 4, 1968, at the Lorraine Motel when King was assassinated. He would go on to become one of the most recognizable and influential civil rights leaders of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
Born in 1941 in the segregated American South, Jackson dedicated his life to expanding voting rights, creating economic opportunities, and amplifying the voices of marginalized communities. In 1984, he founded the Rainbow Coalition, later merged into the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, uniting Americans across racial, economic, and social lines. His presidential campaigns in 1984 and 1988 reshaped the political landscape, building one of the most diverse coalitions in modern U.S. politics.
Beyond politics, Jackson played a pivotal role in popularizing the term “African American” in the late 1980s. He believed the phrase restored cultural dignity and historical context, helping millions embrace a stronger sense of identity and pride. His efforts marked what many scholars called a significant psychological and cultural turning point in American life.
Tributes poured in quickly following news of his passing. Fellow civil rights leader Al Sharpton remembered Jackson as “a movement unto himself,” adding, “He carried history in his footsteps and hope in his voice.” Sharpton reflected on the lessons he learned at Jackson’s side, emphasizing that “faith without action is just noise” — a philosophy that defined Jackson’s life.
President Donald Trump also issued a public statement, calling Jackson “a force of nature” and offering condolences to his family. However, his remarks sparked controversy after he used the tribute to criticize former President Barack Obama and Democratic leaders while rejecting accusations of racism. The comments ignited swift debate online and across political circles, underscoring how Jackson’s life and influence continue to intersect with today’s national conversation.
Michelle and I were deeply saddened to hear about the passing of a true giant, the Reverend Jesse Jackson. We will always be grateful for Jesse's lifetime of service, and the friendship our families share. We stood on his shoulders. Despite political tensions, many leaders and citizens alike are focusing on Jackson’s enduring impact. His advocacy stretched from the streets to the ballot box, from corporate boardrooms to college campuses. He championed job creation, educational access, criminal justice reform, and global human rights long before such issues dominated daily headlines.
Throughout health challenges in recent years, including a rare neurological disorder, Jackson remained a symbol of resilience. Even as he stepped back from public life, his legacy continued through the organizations he built and the generations of activists he mentored.
Reverend Jesse Jackson’s voice once rallied crowds with a simple but powerful reminder: “Keep hope alive.” Today, as tributes echo across the nation and around the world, that message feels more relevant than ever.
He is survived by his children, grandchildren, and a global community that felt personally connected to his cause. His life’s work leaves an indelible imprint on American history — not only in laws changed or campaigns run, but in the confidence and courage he inspired in millions.
As the Jackson family expressed, the most fitting tribute is not only remembrance — but continued action.
