Chris Pine, known for his role as Steve Trevor in the Wonder Woman franchise, recently shared his astonishment regarding the cancellation of Wonder Woman 3. While promoting his directorial debut Poolman, Pine expressed his surprise at the decision to forgo a potentially lucrative billion-dollar franchise.
“I’m stunned that they said no to a billion-dollar franchise and decided to pivot elsewhere,” Pine remarked in an interview with Business Insider. Despite the disappointment, Pine praised Wonder Woman as an iconic character and acclaimed director Patty Jenkins for her contributions to the series.
Reflecting on his character’s journey, Pine acknowledged the unlikelihood of Steve Trevor’s return following his heroic sacrifice in the first film and subsequent resurrection in Wonder Woman 1984. Pine emphasized the significance of Jenkins’ vision, which framed Wonder Woman’s narrative as more than just a superhero saga but also a timeless romance akin to Casablanca.

Initially hesitant to take on the role of Steve Trevor, Pine recounted how Jenkins’ unique approach convinced him to join the project. Instead of viewing the character as a mere love interest, Jenkins envisioned their dynamic as the centerpiece of a poignant love story set against the backdrop of war and heroism.
The cancellation of Wonder Woman 3 came as a surprise to fans in December 2022, following significant restructuring within DC Entertainment. With Jenkins transitioning to new projects like Star Wars film Rogue Squadron, the future of the Wonder Woman franchise remains uncertain.
