Joe Biden Passes Questioning Remarks Towards Japan
President Joe Biden recently made remarks at a Washington, D.C. fundraiser, where he discussed the economic implications of immigration policies, referring to Japan, India, Russia, and China as “xenophobic” for their reluctance to embrace immigration.
During the off-camera event, Biden emphasized the role of immigrants in driving economic growth in the United States. He pointed out that countries like China, Japan, Russia, and India are facing economic challenges due to their resistance to immigration.
Biden’s comments sparked discussion and clarification from White House officials. Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre explained that the president was highlighting the importance of immigration to the United States and making a broader point about the nation’s identity as a nation of immigrants.
Despite Biden’s characterization of Japan and India as “xenophobic,” officials emphasized the enduring importance of the U.S. relationships with both countries. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby highlighted the value of these relationships across various issues, including security.
This isn’t the first time Biden has criticized Japan, Russia, and China for their immigration policies. In a previous interview, he expressed similar sentiments, characterizing these countries as resistant to accepting immigrants beyond their own nationality.
NEW: Biden says that US is prospering because of immigrants, unlike “xenophobic” Japan.

Biden’s remarks come amidst ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with Japan and India as strategic partners in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in response to China’s growing influence. Despite the critique, the U.S.-Japan alliance remains strong, as evidenced by recent state visits and diplomatic engagements.
Japan has grappled with demographic challenges, leading to discussions about the country’s immigration policies. However, like other East Asian nations, Japan has been cautious about significantly increasing immigration to address population issues.
Biden’s comments on immigration policies come amid domestic political pressure regarding immigration-related challenges, including managing migrant influxes and addressing Republican criticism.
