The field of Democratic candidates for President in 2020 is starting to winnow. The latest candidate to end his bid for the presidency is New York City mayor Bill de Blasio, who was a long-shot candidate who never polled at more than 1 percent support among voters.
“It’s true: I’m ending my candidacy for president. But our fight on behalf of working people is far from over,” de Blasio tweeted.
Other Democratic candidates tweeted messages of thanks to de Blasio for focusing on important issues during his campaign.
“Thank you @BilldeBlasio for making working families the center of your campaign,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren tweeted. “This is our moment to fight for an America that works for all of us—not just the people at the top. Let’s keep fighting.”
But not everyone was so gracious about de Blasio’s exit. President Donald Trump, who declared over the summer that New York City “hates” de Blasio, tweeted a snarky message about the mayor’s exit.
“Oh no, really big political news, perhaps the biggest story in years!” Trump tweeted. “Part time Mayor of New York City, @BilldeBlasio, who was polling at a solid ZERO but had tremendous room for growth, has shocking dropped out of the Presidential race. NYC is devastated, he’s coming home!”
