Netflix started out as a small rival to video stores by mailing out movies, right to your home. It was hard to imagine that in just a short time they would take down most of the big companies they were up against.

Now they rule the streaming game! Co-founder Reed Hastings came up with the idea of Netflix in 1997. The idea came from a late fee. When Hastings was charged a $40 late fee for a VHS copy of the movie Apollo 13, he was understandably upset.

While working out at the gym, he realized he liked the gym’s monthly membership policy much better.
