A Sports Filled Weekend It Was
Tennis, anyone? There was plenty of it over a sports-packed weekend.
Roger Federer won a record eighth men’s singles title at Wimbledon on Sunday, beating Marin Cilic 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 in a mere hour and 41 minutes. Federer didn’t lose a set over the entire fortnight in capturing his 19th Grand Slam championship.
Federer, 35, won his first Wimbledon title in 2003, which began a run of five straight. Cilic was slowed by a painful blister on his foot and never looked quite the same after the first 20 minutes of play.
In the women’s finals on Saturday, Spain’s Garbine Muguruza won her first single title, beating Venus Williams 7-5, 6-0. Venus was looking for her sixth championship; Muguruza lost in the 2015 finals to Serena Williams, Venus’ sister. She is the only player to have beaten both Williams sisters for Grand Slam titles, having bested Serena a year ago in the French Open.
GOLF: Sung Hyun Park of South Korea won the U.S. Women’s Open on Sunday in Bedminster, N.J., for her first LPGA Tour victory. Park birdied the 15th hole and then the 17th to take a two-shot lead over teenage amateur Hye-Jin Choi, also of South Korea…Bryson DeChambeau overcame a four-stroke deficit to win the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Ill., by one stroke on Sunday for his first PGA Tour title. That also earned him a berth in the British Open, which begins Thursday.
NASCAR: Hey, another first-time winner. But only for the season, not his career. Denny Hamlin kept Kyle Larson at bay over the final laps to win Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and earn Joe Gibbs Racing its first victory of the season.
BASEBALL: The Los Angeles Dodgers won their ninth straight, beating the Miami Marlins 3-2 …The Oakland A’s swept a three-game series from the Cleveland Indians, scoring four runs in the first on Sunday to win 7-3 … Daniel Murphy hit two of Washington’s five HRs as the Nationals battered the Cincinnati Reds 14-4. The Nats have won four straight.
SOCCER:The U.S. won Group B in the CONCACAF Gold Cup by beating Nicaragua 3-0 on Saturday. The lads play in the quarterfinals on Wednesday night in Philadelphia against Mexico.
