Fly Eagles, Fly
The Philadelphia Eagles haven’t won an NFL championship since 1960 and are 0-2 in Super Bowl games. They get another chance in two weeks in Super Bowl LII when they meet the New England Patriots.
The Eagles (15-3) made quick work of the Minnesota Vikings (14-4) at Lincoln Financial Field with a 38-7 victory in the NFC Championship game. The much-questioned Nick Foles passed for 352 yards and three touchdowns as the Eagles scored the final 38 points of the game.
The Patriots (15-3) came from beyond in a taut playoff thriller to post a 24-20 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars (12-7). The Patriots trailed 20-10 in the fourth quarter and you can probably guess what happened next.
Tom Brady led one long scoring drive and one short one, capping both with touchdown passes to Danny Amendola and the Patriots will get to defend their NFL title. Las Vegas has the Patriots as early 5 ½-point favorites.
Super Bowl LII is a rematch of Super Bowl XXXIX, won 24-21 by the Patriots. The Eagles long ago moved on from coach Andy Reid, quarterback Donovan McNabb and receiver Terrell Owens, but the Patriots are back with Brady and coach Bill Belichick.
GOLF: Jon Rahm won a four-hole playoff with a 12-foot birdie putt to defeat Andrew Landry and win the CareerBuilder Challenge at LaQuinta, Calif. Rahm now ranks second in both the FedExCup and Official World Ranking. He’ll defend his Farmers Insurance Open title later in the week.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL: No big changes coming at the top of the Associated Press poll. No. 1 Villanova routed UConn 81-61 on Saturday and No. 3 Purdue pounded Iowa 87-64. On Sunday, No. 2 Virginia defeated Wake Forest 59-49. The AP poll is released on Monday.
