Trump is literally playing with fire
President Trump slammed California Governor Gavin Newsom and threatened to withhold federal funding to fight wildfires as fires rage across California. On Sunday night, Trump sent out a three-part tweet blasting Newsom for mismanagement of forests and said the wildfires were largely his own fault.
“The Governor of California, @GavinNewsom, has done a terrible job of forest management. I told him from the first day we met that he must “clean” his forest floors regardless of what his bosses, the environmentalists, DEMAND of him,” Trump tweeted. “Must also do burns and cut fire stoppers every year, as the fire’s rage & California burns, it is the same thing-and then he comes to the Federal Government for $$$ help. No more. Get your act together Governor.”
Newsom responded to Trump in two sentences, writing, “You don’t believe in climate change. You are excused from this conversation.”
Other politicians came to Newsom’s aid, responding to Trump’s criticism with witty retorts of their own.
“Raking leaves is as effective at combatting the climate crisis as your phone’s spellcheck is at fixing your tweets. @GavinNewsom is doing his job. Maybe you should try it,” Kamala Harris, a Democratic candidate for president in 2020, tweeted.
“Dear @realDonaldTrump: You are the President for all Americans. Act like it,” Rep. Ted Lieu, a Democrat from California, tweeted. “When a child’s house burns down, the party registration of her parents doesn’t matter. Mother nature does not discriminate based on ideology when she strikes with fires or floods or hurricanes. Get it?”
