BASEBALL
The New York Mets continued their stellar play through the weekend, sweeping the Miami Marlins in a four-game set at Citi Field and running their winning streak to eight games.
The Mets scored all seven runs in the fourth inning of a 7-6 victory on Sunday. Their 10-3 record ties for their all-time best start. Pitcher Matt Harvey, who missed all of last season after having Tommy John surgery, won his third straight start. The Mets are 7-0 at home and 1 ½ games ahead of the Atlanta Braves in the National League East.
In Seattle, Nelson Cruz continued his home-run barrage. He homered in his first two at-bats and now has eight for the season, all in the last eight games. His bases-loaded single in the ninth drove home the winning run in an 11-10 victory over the Texas Rangers. Cruz drove in five runs.
The Kansas City Royals and Oakland A’s continued a nasty series on Sunday with more nastiness. Friday night’s festivities included a bench-clearing incident over a hard slide. Benches cleared again in Saturday’s game. And Sunday there were five ejections in the Royals’ 4-2 win.
NASCAR
Four rain delays did not deter Matt Kenseth from ending a run of 51 races without a victory. Kenseth won at Bristol Motor Speedway in a race that took about nine hours to complete. Kenseth edged Jimmie Johnson, with Jeff Gordon taking third. Kenseth hadn’t won since September of 2013.
GOLF
Jim Furyk, who hadn’t won on the PGA Tour since 2010, shot an 8-under-par 63 and won a two-hole playoff with Kevin Kisner to take the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Furyk birdied both extra holes. It was his 17th win on the Tour.
NHL
Dale Weise’s overtime goal gave the Montreal Canadiens a 2-1 win over the Ottawa Senators and a 3-0 lead in their best-of-seven first round series. Weise has five playoff goals for the Canadiens over the past two years, three of them game-winners.
