Ohtani completed the difficult play for the first time in his career.
Due to its proximity to multiple players and high-priority nature, the act of stealing home plate in a baseball game is a rather difficult maneuver. Many who try are unceremoniously tagged out. If anyone were to successfully pull it off, though, it’s not especially surprising that it’d be one of the league’s biggest rising stars.
Something else you can add to Shohei Ohtani's 2021 season: A steal of home
He and Gosselin execute the double-steal … and he somehow avoided the tag at home

During yesterday’s game between the Los Angeles Angels and the New York Yankees at Angel Stadium, the Angels’ star triple-threat player, Shohei Ohtani, successfully stole home plate in the bottom of the fifth. It was a major piece of a three-run combo for the inning; Ohtani was on third and Phil Gosselin was on first. Gosselin successfully stole second, and in the heat of the moment, Ohtani made a run for home, just barely dodging the tag from Yankees catcher Gary Sánchez.

“I looked up and Sho was sliding into home,” said Angels first baseman Jared Walsh, who was up to bat at the time. “I was like, ‘Wow. OK, that was pretty amazing.’ It was cool. Just another night of Shohei doing something amazing. Watching Sho every day is a treat.”
Not only is this the first time Ohtani has stolen home in his career, it’s the first time any Angel has stolen home since Francisco Arcia in 2018.
“I thought he made a good break,” Angels manager Joe Maddon said, praising Ohtani’s play. “It’s a tough play for the shortstop to come across and make that throw back to the plate. The reason why it did work was because Shohei’s break from third base was on time.”
