This story is so crazy it’s actually the plot of a movie
An Indiana couple has been charged with neglecting their adopted daughter after they abandoned her and moved to Canada. But the couple, Kristine Barnett and Michael Barnett, say the girl they adopted is actually 23 years old and tried to murder them several times.
The couple’s horror story sounds exactly like the plot of the 2009 horror movie “The Orphan.” The couple adopted the girl, Natalia, from Ukraine in 2010, believing she was 9 years old. However, Kristine Barnett said she soon realized Natalia, who suffers from a form of dwarfism, is actually much older–and alleges that Natalia tried to push her onto an electric fence and poisoned her coffee.
“Because of the girl’s condition, it’s been difficult for doctors to determine her age. In June 2010, a doctor estimated her age at 8, but an evaluation in June 2012 showed the girl was about 11 years old, court documents said,” the New York Post reported. “In a recent interview with detectives, Michael, 45, allegedly admitted he knew the girl was a minor when he and Kristine skipped town. They left, knowing the girl didn’t have any connections in the city, and didn’t support her financially other than paying her rent, he said, according to court documents.”
The Barnetts plan to fight the charges against them.
